New Wave of Conscription in Ukraine Junta, new wave of draft-dodging too

Afanasiy, 26 years old, says the current hostilities in the east is not his war. He prefers a different form of patriotism - working and paying taxes.

Recruiters visited his home a couple of times. If Afanasiy gets caught and does not show up in he draft office he may be sentenced up to 5 years in prison. However, this scares him less than the army.

Ukrainian social media are now full of advice on how to avoid the military service and not get into prison. The options range from keeping away from registration venues to bribing enlistment officers or presenting fake medical certificates.

On the other hand there are people like Tamara's son. The 25-year old Nikolay has been recruited 2 years ago. The reservist was supposed to serve just a year but now his demobilisation is not in sight.

Military experts say the draft evaders, if enlisted, will become a dead weight on the battleground.

As hostilities between government and pro-Russia forces in Ukraine's east intensified, Kiev officials once again claimed that whole Russian regular army battalions moved into the country. Moscow described the claim as "hallucinations" and demanded proof. This uncertainty is another argument for draft evaders: against whom are they going to fight if the country is not officially at war?'
